What makes
our studio different from others?
We
are a FULLY EQUIPPED
classically trained authentic pilates studio, having available all pieces of exercise
apparatus to allow the instructor to teach the pilates method optimally for private,
duet and trio sessions.
Formerly
Pilates Fitness in Great Neck, NY, one of Long Islands largest studios. We will
be a unique experience for anyone serious enough to get better or just get into
shape.
At Pilates
Fit, you will increase strength, flexibility, and
endurance and improve posture, alignment, coordination and balanceall without
building bulky muscles. Nothing is forced or repetitive; you emphasize correct
form rather than going for the burn. Boost your energy level and have some fun.
Implementing "Medicine in Motion"
Pilates is MOVEMENT.........
This program
is designed to work closely with your health care professional to achieve your
goals, again emphasizing the close link between health care professionals
and alternative healing techniques.
Safety of
our clients is our primary concern. Our instructors have been trained by Master
Teachers
Romana
Kryzanowska, Sari Pace-Santo, and Bob Leikens at The Pilates Studio in New York.
Further our instructors are required to attend continuing education seminars on
a yearly basis. We feel that instruction should be on a one-to-one basis
to satisfy the needs of the individual client. Then you can progress safely into
duets, trios and mat classes.
The equipment
we use is built to the exact specification of the original apparatus Joseph Pilates
designed. Equipment that is inappropriately sized restricts range of motion, promotes
improper technique, and may even force the client to concentrate on the wrong
muscles. Each exercise is designed to target certain muscle areas; improper equipment
may prohibit the correct muscles from being used.
Our
studio's mission is to preserve and perpetuate Joseph Pilates' original system
of body conditioning. Under the direct tutelage of Romana Kryzanowska, and with
the most comprehensive archival documentation available, Pilates
Fit seeks to maintain Pilates in its purest form.
This ensures the public that they are getting the Authentic Pilates Method
of Body Conditioning and a safe and consistent workout.
Educate
Yourselves
With the current competition
in the fitness industry, consumers are becoming more educated and more wary about
engaging in an exercise program. With all the hype surrounding the Pilates Method
today, it can be confusing to locate a reputable source. Many people have jumped
on the bandwagon, with various degrees of training ranging from one weekend, to
just a few months. Although some may be talented teachers, many teach exercises
based on the ideas of Joseph Pilates' work but incorporate them with other techniques
or methods of exercise. This alters the nature of the Pilates exercise, so that
they may "resemble" Authentic Pilates, but are really something
very different. Others may teach only floor, or "mat" exercises.

In SHAPE magazine's January 2001
issue, they state, "Pick your Pilates class carefully. Pilates trademark
has been canceled. People no longer need formal certification to call themselves
Pilates teachers, so, do your homework before signing up for instruction."
Educate yourself. Find out about a studio you are interested in going to. Ask
where your instructor has been certified. Be sure you are learning Authentic Pilates.
Pilates
Styles
Contemporary Pilates:
(a/k/a west coast style) This is stated as being the next generation of Pilates.
Contemporary Teachers of this method assert that although the method of J. Pilates
was ahead of it's time, certain necessary changes needed to be made. Stott Pilates
and other Contemporary methods' main difference is the placement of the spine.
They also use modifications and variations to prepare people. Recently Stott Pilates
rearranged the order of the exercises. Overall, Contemporary Pilates uses modern
science to adapt the original teachings to today's knowledge.
Classical
Pilates: (a/k/a authentic pilates, traditional pilates, pure pilates, East coast
style) Follow the original Pilates Principals. When J. Pilates published his
book, Return to Life Through Contrology in 1945, he devised a specific
system, technique, and order of exercises to be followed. It is our term for methods
that do not deviate from the original teachings, techniques, spinal alignment,
and the order of the work J. Pilates developed in the early 1920's through 1967.
Romana Kryzanowska began training with Pilates
in 1941 for an ankle injury. After his death, Clara Pilates continued to teach
at and run the studio in New York until 1970. Later, Kryanowska took over running
the studio, which became known as the "Pilates Studio". She and her
daughter, Sari Pace-Santo continue to train people today. Her mission is to keep
the original teachings of J. Pilates.
The
best example of this style is training by Romana Kryzanowska. Ironically, perhaps,
one of the best examples of Contemporary Pilates is found in one of her students,
Moria Stott-Merrithew.
These are some interpretations
or a view of Pilates.
At Pilates Fit, we
do not teach Contemporary Pilates, we just teach PILATES.
We
encourage that you ask the instructor's training and background, and determine
if they are trained using ALL Pilates Apparatus. A 600 hour apprenticeship should
be the BASIC requirement. There are a few reputable training and certification
centers: your instructor should, at the very least, be trained by one of them.
However, with no national standards and the generic name "pilates",
it is coming to the point where just about anybody can get "certified"
on the Internet with little no no real training. So, explore the styles. But,
most of all, trust your gut, and your back. If your instructor does not help you,
cue you, correctively touch you, and you do not feel like you are getting it or
whatever you are getting is pain: get another instructor.

said "If you are true to Pilates, Pilates will be true to you."
